Chairman's Message

Richard A. Walsh, MDAcademic year 2008-2009 was a fruitful period for Departmental growth and enhancement of our research educational and clinical missions.

Research applications totaled over 113 million dollars which represented a 57% increase in requested funding over last academic year. This included 62 American Recovery and Reinvestment Proposals. Drs. Robert Bonomo, Mukesh Jain and Christopher King were elected to the prestigious American Association of Physicians. Dr. Albert Waldo received the Annual Distinguished Scientist Award from the American College of Cardiology and Dr. Kingman Strohl received the Annual Distinguished Services Award from the American Thoracic Society. Dr. Jonathan Stamler, the George Barth Geller Professor of Research at Duke University was recruited as the Inaugural Director of the Institute for Transformative Molecular Medicine.

Our Educational Programs remain very strong. We welcomed another strong, diverse intern recruitment class. Our constituent Divisions completed a successful fellowship program review by the ACGME. Dr. Robert Bonomo was one of only four full time faculty in the School of Medicine to receive an inaugural Master Teacher Award. Finally, Dr. Keith Armitage and Dr. Daniel Ornt initiated and completed a comprehensive program on patient safety sponsored by the Shapiro Institute.

Patient care as an integral part of our academic mission has continued to be a focus for all of our faculty. We were successfully represented in six of eight eligible specialties in the top 1% of programs in the annual US News and World Report ranking. Our faculty see ambulatory patients at 27 practice sites and 32 of them were cited in Cleveland, Northeast Ohio and/or National “Top Doc” listings. Our faculty enjoyed a year to date 35% increase in clinical productivity.

We are proud of our faculty and staff and look forward to another outstanding year in the months ahead.
