Gastroenterology and Liver Disease

I am pleased to share the exciting news that gastroenterology services at University Hospitals Case Medical Center continue to be nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report! Our rankings have improved an impressive ten spots and we hope to continue this positive trend each year. I am also proud to announce that many of our physicians were named “Best Docs” for 2009-2010. In the coming months we look forward to expanding our family of experts with new faculty recruitment to meet the growing needs of patients and referring physicians. With the successful addition of current faculty, we have been able to expand our services into several community locations. We have since increased our community locations to include Brainard Medical Building, along with expanded services at UH Chagrin Highlands and UH Westlake Health Center.
The past few months have been a productive and successful time in our Division for both clinical and basic science research. Several Investigators have received NIH awards studying predictors and outcomes of various digestive health conditions. In addition, a number of faculty have obtained Principal Investigator roles on multiple pharmaceutical clinical trials offering new, innovative therapies and treatments options for patients. We were thrilled to be awarded the first multiple-principal investigator combined training grant (T32) in digestive health, awarded by the NIH to the Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Lerner College of Medicine. The training grant supports post-doctoral fellows (MD’s, PhD’s, and MD/PhD’s) to obtain training in digestive disease sciences for a period of three years. The unique feature of this training program is that trainees will have the option to train either at the CCF Lerner Research Institute, or the CWRU School of Medicine, with the ability to choose among twenty mentors whose laboratories are supported by more than 20 million dollars a year in NIH funding. We are excited that for the first time we will have the opportunity to bring the best students and residents in the country to train in digestive disease sciences at two outstanding institutions. The combined research training program is consistent with the successful model of the CTSC grant headed by our Dean, Pam Davis, MD.
In a truly exciting collaborative effort, we recently joined other UH experts to form University Hospitals Digestive Health Institute. Forming the institute allows specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology, colorectal and general surgery, anesthesiology, pathology, and radiology to join together to provide comprehensive, up-to-date digestive care to patients. Digestive Health Institute providers utilize a multidisciplinary approach, enabling patients to receive the best treatment plan, decided by the most experienced and knowledgeable professionals. With several community and combined clinic locations, patients can receive the expertise of a tertiary medical center close to their home.
