Jackson Wright, M.D., Ph.D. Receives NIH SPRINT Grant

A collaboration of investigators from CWRU and OSU were awarded $14.7 million from the National Institutes of Health to determine if treating hypertensive patients without diabetes to a target systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mmHg reduces cardiovascular or kidney outcomes compared to those treated to the currently recommended systolic blood pressure target of less than 140 mmHg. Approximately half of the 7,500 participants to be enrolled in the study will also have chronic kidney disease. In addition to studying hypertensive patients with and without kidney disease, a substudy of SPRINT will evaluate the effect of the blood pressure goals cognitive function and dementia. Dr Alan Lerner, Professor and Director of the Memory and Aging Center at UHCMC will lead the CCN in this SPRINT substudy.

Five Clinical Center Networks (CCNs) were selected to conduct the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) across the country. Investigators in the CWRU and OSU CCN will be led by Jackson T Wright Jr MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine at CWRU and Director of the Clinical Hypertension Program at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. The CCN will be responsible for recruiting 1,500 participants into the SPRINT trial. The other clinical centers and investigators in the CCN include:

  • Case Western Reserve University
    • Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC - Mahboob Rahman MD, MS, Assoc Professor of Medicine (Dr Rahman will also serve as Co-PI for this CCN)
    • MetroHealth Medical Center - John Sedor MD, Professor and Vice President for Research
    • University Hospitals Case Medical Center – Dr Jackson Wright
    • University Hospitals Medical Practices - Alan Wiggers MD, Adrian Schnall MD, David P Cogan MD, Bradley Hillard DO
  • Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Martin Schreiber MD, Professor and Chairman of Nephrology and Hypertension
  • Ohio State University
    • Division of Nephrology, Lee Hebert MD, Professor of Medicine,
    • Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Kwame Osei, Professor and Chief
  • St Vincent Charity Hospital (SVCH), Laurie Sadler MD, Asst Professor (CWRU) and Director or the Center for Vascular Health at SVCH
  • Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Centers (NEON) , Walter Clark MD, MPH, Medical Director
The SPRINT study will also represent a collaboration of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) that were recently awarded to CWRU and to OSU, which will be extensively utilized in the conduct of the study in this CCN.
