Responsibilities of Medical Students

The student is expected to work‐up one patient admitted on their long, medium and short call days. A work‐up is a history, physical, assessment and plan for a patient admitted to their medicine team. Students are expected to work up a minimum of 8‐10 patients during their inpatient medicine rotation. Students should plan to round on their patients 6 days a week.

The student should perform/obtain appropriate procedures and laboratory work on their patients. Students should not be directly involved in the care of patients they have not worked up.

Students are expected to present all new patients to their ward attending at that physician’s next rounds and to submit a copy of their patient write‐up to either the ward attending or teaching attending. (

Students are expected to pre‐round on their patients so that they may function as an important member of the ward team.

We believe that clinical medicine is best learned by active involvement in patient care with as much responsibility to patient care as your level of training allows. We urge you to participate in the decision making process that relates to your patients.

Students are expected to increase their knowledge base on a patient‐by‐patient basis. This means organizing yourself so that you have adequate time for reading and pursuit of other self‐education while still serving as an effective member of the ward team.
