The Division of Gastroenterology and Liver Disease provides clinical and research training in an integrated program. The goal of the three-year program is for trainees to acquire the knowledge and skills of clinical practice and research in gastroenterology and hepatology.

University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC), the Louis Stokes Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) collaborate to offer fellowship training program in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The program provides a comprehensive clinical and research experience at each hospital.

Two tracks are currently available – a three year general gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship, and a research fellowship.

Candidates for both training programs are expected to be board eligible in internal medicine before entering the fellowship. After successfully completing either program, fellows will be eligible to take the subspecialty examination in gastroenterology established by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Eligibility for the research fellowship is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The clinical and research programs at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals/Veterans Affairs Medical Center have received national recognition in the specific areas of:

  • advanced endoscopy
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • outcomes and health services research
  • colon cancer
  • hepatic transplantation
  • biomedical imaging

Patients with a broad spectrum of digestive and liver diseases come from the city of Cleveland and adjacent communities, as well as throughout the state of Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and abroad. The program provides diagnosis and treatment for a variety of standard and complex gastrointestinal problems such as biliary tract diseases, inflammatory bowel disorders, gastrointestinal neoplasms, parenchymal liver diseases and their complications, as well as orthotopic liver transplantation.
